A Sensual Experience

Spring is in the air,
Beautiful colors everywhere.

A sensory explosion of succulent scents-
Lavender, rose, and hyacinth.

A palette of hue,
In shades of brown, yellow, red and blue.

Bees partake in floral cups of gourmet sorbet,
Delivering drops in a liquid gold display.

Birds flutter and sputter to and fro,
Freely sharing music as they go.

Feelings galore in a wide array,
From a wave of breeze under the shade of a tree to the warmth of the sun on a sultry day.

Walking barefoot in the morning dew,
Wet and wild enjoying the view.

Spring is in the air,
Beautiful colors everywhere.

Enjoyment and relaxation are crucial elements in sustaining mental wellbeing. People are bombarded with life stressors from daily housework, car repairs, family needs, job expectations, politics, and on and on. While people often turn to the phone, computer, and television to decompress these strategies can backfire by revving up the mind, rather than releasing pent up energy.

Nature has a natural calming effect. To improve the natural experience, learn to engage the senses. Begin by attending to each sense. Close your eyes and attend to the sounds around you. What do you hear? Can you identify the sounds? Open your eyes and take in the various colors. Note the sensations in your body as you observe the colors. Walk around and smell various plants. Is the smell pungent, sweet, or citrus? Take time to explore through touch. For example, touch tree bark and feel the woody layers, take a handful of soil and feel the gritty grains sift through the fingers, or lightly touch papery leaves and velvety petals. Take some deep breaths, and just be in the moment letting all the senses coalesce.

A great way to experience nature is through gardening. Gardening can take many forms. It doesn’t have to require a lot of work. It could be caring for some indoor potted plants, or some container plants on the porch. If up for a challenge one can expand into the yard creating vegetable or flower gardens. Caring for the plants, and admiring the handiwork is a big part of the benefits of gardening. For example, spritzing the plants with water can be soothing for the plants as well as the person.
